Enchanting Tree Tunnels of Japan
The Land of the Rising Sun is probably most famous for its breathtakingly beautiful natural landscapes, with less known at least in global context, being some of the Tree Tunnels that double as green hallways. Located along roads, on hiking trails and in calm parks – these wonders of Mother Nature have long been a revered spot for anyone interested in their aesthetic beauty as well.
What Are Tree Tunnels?
Tree tunnels are created by trees growing closely together, forming archways of intertwined branches that tower above and envelope the road or pathway beneath. This scenic feature can be found in many parts throughout Japan where several tree types such as cherry, bamboo and maple merge to create glowing surroundings. The scenery changes with the seasons as lush, green summer turns into spring or autumn vibrant-colored leaves.
Famous Tree Tunnel Locations
- Nakasendo Trail: Located along the historical route between Kyoto and Tokyo, Nakasendo is home to some of Japan's most picturesque tree tunnels. By walking along the trail visitors can enjoy traditional post towns and beautiful natural scenery.
- Cherry Blossom Tunnels: In spring, Cherry blossom tunnels can be seen throughout the country but most notably at places like Yoshino Mountain and possibly my favourite — Philosopher's Path in Kyoto. These famous pink blooms offer amazing sights that draw in travellers from all over the globe.
- Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, Kyoto The vast strip of towering bamboo stalks creates a green tunnel that you cannot miss while in pass through the area. It's this tranquility and time of reflection that both Ross and Mildenhall struggled to define: Walking around in a "alien" world almost.
The Experience
They make me feel calm and amazed as if walking through a natural tunnel. Dappled sunlight filtering down through the leaves, branches that swish and swing gently in an unseen breeze, the faint scents of nature – it is all there to bring a more immersive experience. Tree tunnels are a natural sanctuary; they appeal to the avid hiker, photography buff or anyone seeking some peaceful solace away from the noise of city life.
